No. 2 (2024)

Published maggio 31, 2024

Issue description

The Rivista geografica italiana's Issue 2 (2024) features five articles and seven book reviews.

The issue begins with an original piece on the change in usage and meaning of public and private space during Italy's first Covid-19 shutdown (March-April 2020), examined via the lens of gender and family geography.

To continue, two essays in this issue look at the two major Italian cities, Rome and Milan, from different perspectives. The article about Rome investigates recent housing occupations and contends that they are the outcome of a long-term "habitability crisis" that denies access to housing to entire socioeconomic groups and generations. The article on Milan delves into the historical evolution of the water supply networks with which the city has engaged and continues to interact, framing it through urban ecology discussions.

The current issue also includes the second part of an ethnographic study on migrations through the "Balkan Route". The first part was published in issue 1 (2024). The route's arrival point, Trieste, is now considered.

Finally, an essay provides an update on new approaches utilised in Italy by the National Strategy for Internal Areas (SNAI) in order to better adapt the measurement of peripherality to Sicily's specific characteristics as an island.

The book reviews cover recently published works on mobilities, urban geography, and the role of digital platforms in the worldwide expansion of tourism. Other subjects include landscape as a social phenomenon; ‘radical cartographies’, and contemporary alterations of manufacturing areas in Italy.
