Generative Artificial Intelligence in School and University Education.

Risks and Opportunities

Education Sciences & Society – Vol. 15, n. 2/2024

This issue’s theme aims to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can enhance the learning experiences of students and teachers in the current context, where this technology is transforming teaching practices and assessment methods.

Over the past ten years, there has been a rapid increase in interest towards Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies (Farazouli et al., 2023; Moorhouse et al., 2023), especially in educational contexts, including primary and secondary schools as well as universities. Recent advancements in GenAI promise to revolutionize teaching and assessment practices by introducing new opportunities. However, they are also raising concerns about academic integrity (Cotton et al., 2023; Nikolic et al., 2023), equity (Sandvik et al., 2023), and the need to provide adequate support for teachers in designing and safely, consciously, and responsibly using educational tools supported by such technologies (Zhang & Wang, 2021).

This issue seeks to explore various aspects of GenAI in education and university training by collecting experiences and reflections on the following topics:

1. Integration of GenAI in Teaching Practices:

  • Examples and experiences: impact on student learning and teacher-student relationships.
  • Support and development of digital skills.
  • Students' Voices on the use of GenAI in the classroom: changes in motivation, engagement, and quality of academic performance.
  • Ethical issues and student privacy concerns.

2. Personalization of Learning:

  • AI technologies for adaptive learning.
  • Personalized experiences for students with diverse needs and backgrounds: the role of GenAI in promoting inclusive learning.
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness and equity of these approaches.

3. Role of Teachers in the GenAI Era:

  • Challenges and opportunities for teachers with the introduction of AI.
  • AI in teacher training and professional development.
  • Teachers' perceptions and attitudes towards new AI-based Educational Technologies.

4. Psychological and Social Impacts:

  • Effects of interaction with AI on student motivation and well-being.
  • Social dynamics and collaboration in AI-assisted educational environments.
  • Students' perceptions and attitudes towards GenAI.

5. Future Perspectives:

  • Emerging innovations in GenAI applied to education.
  • Visions for the future of schools and universities with AI.
  • Utopian and dystopian scenarios of AI-enhanced education.
