This paper focuses on culture in urban areas and how it contributes in building urban sustainability. In the first part it looks at culture and cultural sustainability in urban policies, evaluating possible developments from a theoretical point of view. Sustainability and its attention to the community and to the local context can help cultural policies and the enhancement of resources to improve the distribution of actions and the involvement of citizens on the urban territory. That’s why a participatory mapping process was chosen to investigate urban cultures. In this theoretical-methodological framework the project ‘Mappiamo le culture’ carried out a participatory cultural mapping process of the places and protagonists of the cultural change taking place in the city of Brescia.
