Abstract

In this article, based on a presentation at the Franco Fasolo Study Days, the author addresses the issue of the epistemological foundations that underpin diagnostic procedures, along with their implications, potential, and limitations. If diagnosis is a working tool that must lead to effective results, it is necessary to reflect on the methods by which the diagnostic process is developed and implemented in practice. The methods of classical psychoanalysis, categorical/descriptive systems, and methods linked to the findings of empirical research are considered
