Abstract

Freiburg im Breisgau stands as a prominent example of successful sustainable urban policy in Europe. The German city, emblematic of ecological transition, is examined in the context of recent tensions between urban growth and sustainability, within a uniquely German understanding of ‘nature’—deeply embedded with identity and mythological values, rooted in the history of the German people and associated with the figure of the Germanic leader Arminius, all within a rapidly evolving geopolitical framework. Freiburg’s urban fabric offers an interesting vantage point from which to observe these dynamics, where mythology, identity, and pragmatism intertwine—from Vauban, the emblematic green district, to the controversial Dietenbach project currently under development. These case studies raise key questions about the legacy of the German and European planning models, which today are being tested by economic, political, and environmental crises.
