Abstract

Objectives: This article aims to describe the outcomes of residential care pathways undertaken by patients diagnosed with substance use disorders, referred by the Ser.D. of Portogruaro (VE) to the therapeutic communities (CT) in Veneto, during the five-year period from 2017 to 2022.

Materials and methods: By analyzing the qualitative and quantitative data recorded in "Gedi" and "Geki", the two digital platforms used by the Services to manage patients, the study considered the residential care pathways of 77 patients and evaluated their retention in treatment, examining the last residential care pathway undertaken by each user. The differences in terms of retention in treatment between users with opioid use disorders and those with alcohol use disorders were then analyzed.

Results: The collected data show that dropping-out of the care pathway, particularly due to lack of compliance, is the most frequent outcome, with an average recorded stay of just over six months. Additionally, less than one-fifth of the users complete the therapeutic program.

Conclusions: The results suggest further research to explore the causes of dropout, due to prevent them, as longer retention in treatment is correlated with better outcomes of rehabilitation interventions.
