Within the context of a residential facility for young mothers, this article exam-ines the specific experience of separation between mother and child. It explores how this painful and potentially devastating event can, through processes of reflection and emotional containment, be worked through by all those involved, thereby
preventing enduring traumatic outcomes. A case study exemplifying these dynamics is presented, together with a detailed account of the careful multidisciplinary team work that supported the process.
