Abstract
By using insights gained from the Direct Observation method, this article explores
family dynamics that emerge in a same-sex parent family with twin children. It discusses
the complex and unique “dance” between subjectivities that is needed for the
formation of a rainbow family and turns its gaze toward a clinical approach capable of
understanding such family realities, shifting the focus away from the sexual and gender
connotations that have long been associated with the idea of parenthood. To support
this idea, the author shares excerpts from her own protocols that provide insights into
the observational process that was carried out, opening a possible pathway for reflections
on aspects of the theory that, in order to be understood in depth, must first be
thought through. The article concludes by sharing the elements that constituted the
restitution of the work to the family, which took the form of a fairy tale.
