Abstract

Virtual reality and digital communication represent significant aspects of contemporary life, significantly affecting individual psychic development. The relationship between the real and the virtual is often viewed from the polarized perspective of an alternative opposition, where the real is what is authentic, while the virtual is perceived as a world of make-believe that hinders the possibilities of individuative development. The author of the article, while acknowledging that these risks are absolutely present in the pervasive use of technological tools that characterizes contemporaneity, nevertheless stresses that in order to understand the experiences of many of our patients, especially the youngest, ‘digital natives’, it is appropriate to consider the virtual as an extension of reality, rather than an alternative to it. The author also addresses the topic of online analysis, trying, also with reference to some clinical cases, to reflect on some aspects related in particular to the fate of the body in online analysis and the experience of presence.
