The re-emergence of sociological attention on labour conflicts reveals not only the presence of new and old actors, new and old forms of expression, but also of different contents. The trajectory of Alain Touraine’s sociology offers insights to study its different contents as ‘stakes’, corresponding to three overlapping phases: labour organ-isation and labour process; new collective identities and coalitions with new social movements; subjectivity and individual rights. With reference to the contributions in this Special Issue, the international relevance of this interpretative approach is revis-ited.
