The assessment and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders involve functional rather than nomothetic, dimensional rather than categorical criteria, as required by the ICF model. These criteria, based on a multifactorial approach, also include emotional and motivational aspects and allow the frequent comorbidities in neurodevelopmental disorders to be weighed in the diagnosis.
A few examples of functional impairment involved in different diagnostic categories are mentioned, e.g., temporal processing or attention and concentration deficits. The training processes require a transdisciplinary approach, to be implemented in future psychologists through the professional training required by the new habilitating degrees.
