The article provides an indepth analysis of the role of affective and sexual education as an essential component of public health and human development across the entire lifespan. Drawing on the World Health Organization’s definition of health, it highlights the inseparable interconnection between sexuality and affectivity, supported by extensive scientific evidence from psychological, sexological, and relational research. The authors emphasize that in Italy sexual education remains fragmented, noncompulsory, and lacking a unified regulatory framework, placing the country among the lowest in Europe in terms of effective implementation.
International evidence (WHO, UNESCO, EU) demonstrates that Comprehensive Sexuality Education programs reduce adolescent pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, and risk behaviors, while fostering emotional competencies, consent, respect, and responsible citizenship. Early education does not anticipate sexual activity; rather, it functions as primary prevention against violence, discrimination, and misinformation, issues that are currently exacerbated by the widespread use of online pornography as a primary source of information for many adolescents.
The article concludes with a clinical case study, offering a practicebased reflection that supports the theoretical framework presented in the preceding sections. The treatment process, following the successive stages of therapy, illustrates in a concrete and applied manner how affective and sexual education and therapy are indispensable for individual, relational, and social wellbeing, and conversely how their absence constitutes a tangible public health and educational risk.
